HSOBA exclusive offer: Tom Pickering's autobiography
When Old Boy and Tasmanian jazz legend Tom Pickering died in 2001, he left behind a bounty of autobiographical notes, sketches and photographs which have now been compiled into a single volume by his niece Jan Kuplis titled One Foot in the Groove.
The book traces the development of jazz in Tasmania from its fumbling beginnings in the 1930s to the early 1990s when the uniquely-flavoured, world-class Pearce-Pickering Jazz Band was a regular feature at Wrest Point. Who would have thought that three teenage boys messing about with tin lids, sticks and kazoos would eventually carve out a distinctly recognisable Tasmanian-shaped niche in the American-dominated world of jazz?
Partly historical, sometimes critical and, in parts, hysterical, this history of Tom’s life as a jazzman is written in true Pickering style – witty, conversational and with just a touch of irreverence. It is s a fun read and a truly worthwhile contribution to Tasmanian music history.
