Young Alumni Award for 2023
On Monday 30 October, the annual Year 12 Leavers’ Lunch was held at Burbury House. During the lunch, the winner of the Young Alumni Award for 2023, Dr Sam Johnston (’12), was acknowledged. The current Year 12 Leavers, together with then HSOBA, select the winner of the Young Alumni Award and yesterday they had the opportunity to hear Sam speak about his journey since leaving Hutchins.
Sam graduated from Hutchins in 2012 where he was School Captain. He moved to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Biomedicine and a Doctor of Medicine at The University of Melbourne, where he was the recipient of the E H Embley Memorial Medal in Anaesthesia. In his final year of Medical School, Sam represented the University and Australia in a team at the International Global Health Case competition based at Emory University in the United States, where they were the first team from Australia to win this competition. He completed his medical internship and residency at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and in 2022, was accepted into Harvard University to study a Master of Public Health. Sam graduated from Harvard with honours and received the Gareth M Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice. He has worked with international organisations such as Hospitals Beyond Boundaries, is now an Anaesthetics Registrar at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and has been accepted into the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
