Round Square conference
At the end of Term 1, eight students travelled to Munich, Germany, with Mr Mike Webster and Rev Dr Lee Weissel to participate in a Round Square conference on Democracy at Landheim Ammersee, an international boarding school.
The trip consisted of a pre-conference tour, which involved sightseeing around Munich, a snowy hike in the Alps and a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle. The students also visited the BMW Museum, went on a tour of Allianz Stadium, visited Bayern Munich’s home ground and did some shopping in Munich.
During the conference, students heard from guest speakers, including Tom Sparrow an International Correspondent currently working in Germany. He delivered a fascinating talk on deep fakes and fake news and its impact on democracy. There was also a zoom call with 100-year-old survivor of the infamous Dachau concentration camp. Now living in the US, Nick Hope spoke to us about his life and his determination to survive the hardships he endured under the Germans then Russian regimes. These were two of the highlights of a highly engaging conference!
During the trip the students had amazing experiences, meeting and making friends with people from all over the world, whilst showing resilience, strength and courage.
We look forward to many more Round Square opportunities for Hutchins students in the coming years.
