International Student Science Conference
From 2–12 September 2018, Year 10 students Louis Kingston, William Mather and Riley Stevenson, together with science teacher Dr Keith Martin-Smith attended the 2018 International Student Science Conference (ISSC), hosted by Liceo Marco Foscarini in Venice.
‘Our hosts could not have been more hospitable, feeding us with delicious Italian food and providing us with lots of opportunity to soak up the culture of Venice. The conference theme was “Our Planet, Our Home” and the presentations from all of the schools involved addressed many different aspects of this theme – from designing ‘sponge cities’ to the effects of marine plastics. We learnt about the hydrodynamics of the Venice Lagoon and the geology of the Dolomites which we then experienced in person on a day trip.
We saw fossils from the Dolomites in the Natural History Museum and enjoyed the wonderful artwork in the Palazzo Ducale, looked at industrial site rehabilitation and visited a church dating from the 7th century on the island of Torcello.
It was a fantastic experience for all involved!’
