Hutchins congratulates its 25th Rhodes Scholar
Congratulations to Old Boy Billy Blackett (’19) who has been announced as the latest Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar. Billy, 21, will soon complete his Bachelor of Economics at the University of Tasmania, whilst establishing his business Affordable Tutoring Tasmania, engaging fellow young Tasmanians and supporting students both in-person and online at any stage from primary school through to Year 12.
The Rhodes Scholarship, which recognises leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities as well as academic attainment, will enable him to study a Masters in Education at Oxford University, specialising in digital and social change. Billy hopes to accomplish this in the first year and is considering a Masters in Comparative Social Policy for his second year.
In Year 11, Billy was awarded a Hutchins Community Scholarship and went on to be awarded numerous prizes, acknowledging his academic and co-curricular abilities, including Dux of the School in Year 12.
In 2020 Billy returned to Hutchins, accepting a position as Boarding House Residential Tutor. In 2022, he was invited to be a member of the HSOBA and was also presented with the Young Alumni Award, in recognition of his commitment to service to the community in disability mentoring, college tutoring and youth programs.
Billy is the 25th Rhodes Scholar of The Hutchins School.
