EAL/D and English Assistance
International students are welcome, important, and highly valued at The Hutchins School.
Our school offers EAL/D and specialist English Assistance classes for local and international students. Students, for whom English is an additional language, will be assessed for their level of English competency before being offered a place at the School. The teachers and teacher assistants who offer EAL/D support and English Assistance work in consultation with classroom and subject teachers to support EAL/D learners to participate fully in the academic, co-curricular and social life of the School.
For younger students entering our school, our bi-lingual (Mandarin-speaking) teacher assistant work with students in consultation with Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classroom teachers to support the academic, social and emotional development of EAL/D learners. From Prep to Year 6, specialist language teachers provide in-class support, as well as individual and small group EAL/D support to teach English language acquisition and literacy skills.
For students in the Middle and Senior Schools, if their ability as an EAL/D learner is considered sufficient to access the secondary curriculum, they will be placed in appropriate classes which include an EAL/D elective subject, in addition to ACARA English, as determined by their current English language level and experience. EAL/D classes cater for a mix of abilities and support students to develop their listening and reading comprehension, as well as improve confidence and fluency in speaking and writing English.
EAL/D is offered at pre-tertiary level in Tasmania and students can study English up to Level 3 at The Hutchins School*. Some universities and tertiary institutions will allow scores from this course to contribute to their TCE entry.
*Course access requirements apply.
